Laser Hair Removal

This procedure is for the patient who wishes a quicker less painful way of removing unwanted body hair. This procedure does not result in permanent hair removal in all patients but it does reduce the amonount of residual hair following each treatment. Treatments can be with a laser or with an intense pulsed light.

Lasers produce highly focused, intense beams of light that are absorbed by dark pigments in the hair follicles beneath the skin's surface and converted to heat, destroying the follicles and preventing hair growth for up to two years. Multiple treatments are required for complete hair removal -- the follicle must be "active" at the time of treatment, and not all follicles are active at the same time. Treatments are needle-free and do not require anesthesia. Most patients feel nothing more than a slight sting like the snap of a rubber band.

The Epilaser is designed to treat unwanted hair of the face and the body. This is the most effective treatment for this procedure.

Chemical Peel

Chemical peels remove damaged outer layers of skin on the face to smooth texture, reduce scarring, and remove blemishes and pre-cancerous growths to produce healthy, glowing skin. Peel formulas and strengths are tailored to each patient. Peels can be combined with other procedures such as facelifts for a younger fresher look. They may be covered by insurance if they are performed for medical rather than cosmetic reasons.

Laser Tattoo Removal
The following is a brief list of the lasers available and what each can do for tattoos:
  • VersaPulse removes tattoos, vascular and pigmented lesions and veins.
  • Q-switched Nd:YAG removes tattoos, vascular and pigmented lesions, as well as veins.
  • Con-Bio Q-switched Nd:YAG removes pigmented lesions and tattoos.
  • Alexandrite removes tattoos, vascular lesions, veins and brown spots.

As you can see, there are many lasers and many ways to treat the same condition. The main difference is in how patients will react to each machine and the length of their convalescent phase. The physician must take into consideration the type of tattoos, their location, and the patient's skin type-color, thickness and texture. It is a very individualized process and one that must be customized for each patient. An additional treatment is salabrassioin which was pioneered here at the Manchester Clinic over 25 years ago. This technique removes those difficult collars that lasers find hard to remove such as the color green.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion removes a layer of surface skin to improve the appearance of facial scarring due to acne, chicken pox, injury or other causes, as well as uneven pigmentation, wrinkles, sun damage, tattoos, age spots and certain kinds of skin lesions. The skin is abraded with a high-speed rotary instrument for a dramatically smoother, fresher look. After the procedure it is normal to feel a sensation similar to sunburn for a week or so, at which time most patients are able to return to work. The new regenerated skin will likely appear pinker than usual for two to three months. Patients should be sure to adequately protect their skin from sunlight.
